Murrumbateman

Murrumbateman is a vibrant rural village 30 minutes from Canberra and 2.5 hours south of Sydney. The village is made up of a diverse and active community and is home to a large number of small business owners. Historically based on wool and beef cattle it has recently emerged as a centre for wineries, regional cafes and restaurants and award-winning B&Bs and also is base for horse riding excursions.

Four Winds Vineyard

Four Winds Vineyard is a true family affair. When Suzanne and Graeme Lunney bought a sheep property in 1998 just outside of Murrumbateman and planted it under vines, they certainly didn’t envision that their daughters would one day both return to the farm and take over the reins.
But it was obviously meant to be… the girls both ventured off, fell in love and somehow the perfect skill set came together… daughter Jaime, a forensic biologist turned winemaker, met her husband, Bill Crowe also a winemaker in California’s Napa Valley and together they returned to the vineyard. Meanwhile, Sarah met her husband, John Collingwood, while mountain-biking in Victoria. They’ve maintained their love of mountain biking and now run bicycle short film nights at the winery and John has swapped physiotherapy for farming and is the vineyard manager while Sarah brings her marketing and event management expertise to the business – a James Halliday five-star winery.
The four are a dynamic combination who have a wonderful energy and enthusiasm for the winery, the wine industry and the region and it’s this passion that saw them create and build a new cellar door that opened earlier this year.  The new building has been lovingly created from old, re-purposed materials and it has a wonderful, inviting atmosphere. Already it has prompted many a visitor to pull up stumps for the afternoon on the deck overlooking the vines with a glass of handcrafted wine in one hand and a slice of wood-fired pizza in the other.
And while Suzanne and Graeme take more of a backseat these days, it is rare that they are seen without their secateurs tending to 14 hectares of vines and the 200 rose bushes planted around the vineyard.
Four Winds Vineyard was recently the recipient of the Visitor Experience Award at the Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards.
